Unveiling the Future of Automotive Manufacturing with AI

5. February 2024

In an exciting new venture, brighter AI is joining forces with a consortium spearheaded by the VW Group. Our mission? To revolutionize the automotive assembly line through a groundbreaking project centered around computer vision and edge computing.

Setting the Stage for Innovation

The automotive industry is on the cusp of a transformation. With this project, our overarching aim is to significantly enhance the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing process. How? By deploying innovative computer vision and edge computing applications tailor-made for meticulous and automated inspection during the assembly line process.

Project Goals: Precision, Privacy, and Progress

Our objectives are ambitious:

  1. Empowering VW: We’re enabling VW to harness Industrial Computer Vision (ICV) in their industrial settings. The result? Improved quality control and heightened operational efficiency.
  2. Ensuring GDPR Compliance: A key aspect of our project is the full-body anonymization of data. This is crucial for videos and images collected in manufacturing units, guaranteeing privacy and compliance with stringent GDPR regulations. Our focus on anonymization extends to controlled environments like factories and offices, ensuring no individual can be identified through name tags or distinctive marks.
  3. Real-Time Processing: We’re setting our sights on real-time processing and edge anonymization, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in data privacy and processing speed.

The Collaborative Force

This project is a synergy of expertise and innovation:

  • Volkswagen (the consortium leader) & Audi provide data and expertise on the framework conditions, such as data protection or the necessary approval processes for IT systems and test equipment in industrial processes. They also provide their “Vision Workbench” as the basic software for the first ICV applications, which already offers initial functionalities such as camera interfaces.
  • Zeiss is working on sensor technology by designing and integrating sensors into production lines along the automotive manufacturing process chain. Zeiss also provides sensor applications and runs inline inspections. On top of that, they will assist Fraunhofer IPA in the development of new evaluation algorithms.
  • 4Wheels and VW Sachsen focus on wheel and tire inspection, they bring a specialized approach to the project.
  • brighter AI focuses on real-time full-body anonymisation thus ensuring compliance, a cornerstone of this project.
  • HTW Dresden‘s focus is on designing and developing the computer vision and edge computing applications, particularly for inspecting car rims and tires, assembly inspection, anomaly detection and democratization. Their research will not only lead to patents but also enrich academic discourse through dissertations and publications.
  • Fraunhofer IPA develops innovative AI-based methods for industrial image and data processing.
